Chuck + Betty | Wedding

November 21st, 2011

In 2009, 163 couples set a Guinness Book of World Records for the most couples married in a 24 hour period in a single location. In the spirit of competition, Stacey Miles, of Uniquely, I Do, attempted to break that record on November 11th (11-11-11).
Betty and Chuck were one of those couples. Uniquely, I Do teamed up with some local vendors to provide standard posed portraits, but Betty and Chuck wanted something a little more personal. I was honored that they chose me, and they were a wonderful couple to work with. From the way Chuck gets Betty to laugh, to the love they have for each other, it was a lovely afternoon. They had an intimate reception the following day at Uptown Deli in Richland, and we were lucky to get some photos of them on the roof with that iconic Uptown Atomic vintage sign.

foto tuesday | Cape Disappointment

November 15th, 2011

I’d like to nominate myself for the worst blogger ever. Seriously. It’s bad enough I don’t filter all the spam comments until I have 200+ to shuffle through, but I have new posts so rarely I see cobwebs growing in the html codes. I have sessions I haven’t blogged, a wedding I haven’t blogged, and several MBs of personal photos I’m still telling myself will get on here. So when I do make an appearance, I like to make a big one. Thus, I have this beautiful view for you.
Last month I took a long weekend on the Oregon Coast, and we made a quick jaunt up to Washington so we could cross the insanely long (4.06 miles!!!) bridge connecting Astoria and Megler. We decided to stop by Cape Disappointment while we were up there. If you’re wondering why it’s called Cape Disappointment, the real reason is that it’s not easy to access the lighthouses! To start with, you pay $10 to get into the park, to be there for an hour. Then, you find out the road map they give you doesn’t make a lot of sense. Then you learn that you can’t drive to the actual Cape Disappointment Lighthouse – it’s about a quick mile hike. But when the skies look like they are about to open up, you begrudgingly agree that perhaps the other lighthouse, being a quarter mile hike, is the better of the two. Thus, here is the North Head Lighthouse. Built in 1856, the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse wasn’t in the best position as ships from the North couldn’t see it. So this one was installed in 1898.

Buddy + Sierra | Family Photographer

November 6th, 2011

Buddy and Sierra met in 2007 when a friend introduced them at a party. Not knowing they’d still be together 4 years later, she gently urged Buddy to introduce himself. 4 years later I’m still surprised at my match-making skills. So when Sierra called me and said she wanted some photos of her and buddy, I was thrilled to oblige. We weren’t sure the Columbia Basin had any nice fall weekends left, but mother nature had better plans and gave a us gorgeous (albiet, cold) Saturday afternoon.

Foto Tuesday | Desert Sunsets

August 23rd, 2011

We hear a lot of complaints about the region we live in. Although we are comprised of several smaller communities, if each individual city were to merge, we would be the fourth largest city in the state. Because of this unique set-up, we have almost everything we could get in a larger city, but we are much more spread out, and it isn’t difficult to get land here. Another complaint is the weather. This one, I can’t excuse. Summers can be miserable. We are afterall, considered to be in the desert. But as if God is saying “Thank you for putting up with this awful heat, here is a little token of my appreciation,” we get views like this during the summer.

An Editing Review | Wedding Photographer

August 8th, 2011

The most time consuming part of being a photographer, is the editing. A typical family shoot takes about 4 hours to edit, and an all-day wedding can take from 2 to 3 weeks. It’s also the hardest part. When I’m shooting, I’m either doing portraits or being a photojournalistic photographer (big name for describing that I document things as they happen instead of ‘making’ them happen). But when I’m editing… decisions, decisions. The hard decision I face with portrait style photos is if I give it to the client in color or black and white. Some photos are easy to decide – if there’s even the slightest bit of motion blur (bridesmaid adjusting the veil) they become black and white. Bridal portraits are usually what I debate the longest over, and end up being the last thing I edit as a result. Occasionally, the subject will look so fantastic in color and b/w, that I just have to give them both copies. Paula is one of those brides. I’ve gone back to this set for the last 4 days trying to determine which is my favorite, and I can’t pick one. So Paula… here’s a sneak peek of 2 of the photos you’ll be getting.
